Where heartfelt indie-rock music is already occupying a large space in the music industry, James Marriott brings something unique.

After his success in the charts earlier this year with his single, ‘I Don’t Want to Live Like This’, James Marriott has announced his sophomore album ‘Don’t Tell The Dog.’ The album announcement came with the announcement of a third new single: ‘It’s Only Love’.

Contrast to the upbeat, gritty indie style of the previous two singles, ‘It’s Only Love’ takes on a reflective, smooth tone, focusing on feelings of heartbreak and loss. Already gaining traction on social media before its release, the track builds from the very start – characteristic of James Marriott’s distinct production style. Marriott’s voice reaches impressive low notes, adding a mournful feel to the steady, harmonious track. The drums are constant and clear, syncing well with the clean sound of the bass and electric guitar. The chorus is layered and smooth, melodically reaching new heights. The ricochet of the single strums adds a melancholic tone as Marriott confesses “I find myself when I see your face in the mirror.”

The feeling of loneliness is clear from just the instrumental; drawn out guitar licks, an echoing harmony which follows Marriott’s vocals in the chorus “It’s only love, it’s nothing new anymore.” Although slower than previous releases, the track maintains the power and catchiness of any of his discography.

Each note seems slotted perfectly into the song; the melody is natural, yet not predictable. ‘Its Only Love’ is a track which truly proves Marriott’s songwriting talent, both through the sentiment and through the music itself. James Marriott’s sophomore album is out on June 13th 2025, this single confirms it will definitely be worth a listen!
