By Elsa Commander.
Barely out of school, Kent band Camber serves an equal amount of heartache and raucous indie energy with their take on young love in their debut single: ‘What Would You Do?’
Camber takes on a relentless indie sound; a well put-together thrum of driving guitars and definite drums by seventeen year old drummer Patrick ‘Paddy’ Horan. The track is a proper ‘earworm’, and having teased the track for well over a year in their live shows, Camber have finally freed their show-goers from the grip of such an addictive unreleased track with this studio-produced version. With this debut single produced by Sebastian Steinberg and Grammy winning Matt Lawrence, the boys have scored cleanly in securing a path for themselves in the industry from such a young age.
‘What Would You Do?’ attacks the listener from the get-go: direct, electric strums on lead singer Elliott Graham’s guitar resolve an immediate absorption into the sound for the listener.
Bassist Joe Payne’s clear, gritty tone sets the foundation for the verses, slowly building in rhythm until the crashing instrumental at the end of the song. The chorus is melodically energetic and flows neatly in with the desperate lyrics ‘Love did you lie, or was I just something to try?’ The build of the pre-chorus’ drums is compelling and thrilling, leaving you ready for the vocals of Elliott Graham in the explosive chorus.
Camber’s vibrant rock sound is reminiscent of Sam Fender and Bruce Springsteen, as well as bringing forward undertones of Wunderhorse and Fontaines D.C. – are they the next in line for the throne of British and Irish rock?
With the help of their record label Fierce Panda Records, the release of ‘What Would You Do?’ marks the start of Camber’s epic new journey. Camber have already placed the release of an EP in October, with this punchy single as the title track.
These three boys from Kent are what Wilder is about – proving the music industry that young people can make music on a professional level. Especially for a first single, ‘What Would You Do?’ shows great promise of the music to come – we’re waiting with baited breath for the EP!
